206C: Small Town, Big Ambitions: Leveraging Existing Assets in Downtown Almonte, Ontario through Innovative Streetscape Renewal

October 05, 2016

2:10pm - 2:25pm

Almonte in rural Eastern Ontario has taken small steps in recent years to breathe new life into its downtown through the adaptive reuse of once-derelict textile mills nestled along the Mississippi River to expanding its riverfront access through pathway linkages. The session will explore how a small community leveraged these assets to spur positive change in its downtown through innovative streetscape design and infrastructure servicing.

The session will focus on the relationships between planning, design and built form in downtown Almonte to improve below-grade servicing and above-grade streetscape infrastructure. It will highlight the process involved in developing, assessing and evaluating alternatives, and the trade-offs involved in maintaining parking supply, while creating a walkable, livable downtown.
