This session focuses on using nature and natural systems to create the foundational elements for planning and building healthy rural communities. Rather than viewing nature as a development constraint, this session will explore ways in which green infrastructure can be incorporated into new planning frameworks for improving community health, resilience and sustainability. Participants will learn about an OMAFRA/University of Guelph research project into innovative practices in the use of green infrastructure in rural areas. Case studies will include examples of naturalized parks and open spaces, source water, natural heritage and wetland habitat protection, water quality improvements, sustainable forestry practices, local food production and soil erosion controls.
