401: Public Space ARTivism: A Creative Approach to Community Engagement

The STEPS Initiative, an award winning public arts organization based in Toronto, shares its approach to engaging diverse communities in innovative public realm projects—like the World’s Tallest Mural.

Sharing a variety of case studies of particular relevance to planners, the session will highlight the principles that guide the initiative’s work and the ways in which art can be leveraged as an engagement tool for a broad range of community projects. Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm unique solutions to urban challenges faced by planners in engaging the community in a conversation about the public realm.
