506C: Maximizing Value of Public and Private Open Spaces: 3 Cases of Urban Renewal in Older Neighbourhoods

October 06, 2016

11:10am - 11:25am

Many neighbourhoods in the GTA face low levels of parkland per capita, and much of what is available is outdated, covered with extensive lawn and obsolete facilities, and not relevant to current public needs.
In partnership with municipalities and the private sector, the SNAP program—Sustainable Neighbourhood Retrofit Action Plan—implements integrated neighbourhood renewal strategies for existing public and private open spaces. It takes advantage of limited space to achieve a variety of social, environmental and economic objectives. The presentation will share three case studies: the internationally acclaimed San Romanoway Revival Project—Jane and Finch, Toronto—Glencrest Park Renewal—Bayview Glen, Markham—upper nine multi-functional pond and open space—County Court, Markham.
