The Greater Golden Horseshoe is expected to grow by 3.7-million people by 2031. Ontario planners are challenged with the difficult task of reconciling expectations for population and employment growth as defined in the Growth Plan, while supporting energy conservation and efficiency, improved air quality, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change adaptation, as directed by the Provincial Policy Statement. Community Energy Plans offer one way to balance these priorities. This session will focus on the benefits of community energy planning and the role of planners in establishing the conditions necessary to support CEP development and implementation. It will feature The City of Burlington and the City of Guelph as case studies, reviewing their experiences in creating a community energy plan.
