604A: Active Neighbourhoods Peterborough Participatory Planning for a Healthy Public Realm

October 06, 2016

11:45am - 12:00pm

This session will look at participatory planning as a mechanism to engage marginalized community members (i.e., people living in poverty, youth, older adults, and people with disabilities) in public realm design. Using the Peterborough Stewart Street Active Neighbourhoods Canada [ANC] project as a case study, I engaged in embedded participant research over a span of two years. I also employed a participatory evaluation approach to understand the efficacy of the participatory planning approaches employed in the ANC project, from the perspective of the community the project sought to engage. In this session, I will introduce participants to the ANC project context and approach, and will share the results of my embedded research.
