702: Indigenous Consultation in Provincial and Municipal Planning

October 06, 2016

2:00pm - 3:00pm

Over the past year, the Ontario government has taken steps to engage First Nation and Métis groups in reviews of various provincial land use plans and in provincial environmental protection and governance plan initiatives. First Nation and Métis communities in Ontario are exerting their inherent Aboriginal and/or Treaty rights in land use planning decisions that can impact these rights. Preparing a good consultation process requires shared ownership, trust, respect, an understanding of the unique challenges of many indigenous communities, knowledge of Aboriginal and Treaty Rights in the planning area, and an understanding of the planner’s role. Our interactive session will highlight the importance and main elements of ‘meaningful consultation’ with indigenous groups and through round table discussions will explore the challenges and solutions from a planning perspective.Over the past year, the Ontario government has taken steps to engage First Nation and Métis groups in reviews of various provincial land use plans and in provincial environmental protection and governance plan initiatives.
