The public realm is comprised of the open spaces, streets and buildings that are in public ownership – often comprising more than 25-30% of the land area in a community. Not only does the public realm play an important role in where we create or move from place to place, it is also where everyday life unfolds, enabling us to socialize and shape our experience of ‘place,’ which impacts our personal, social and economic wellbeing. Moreover, the public realm can also play an essential role in strengthening the resilience of communities. Student members and young professionals are invited to join Harold Madi, Urban Places Canada Lead and former Director of Urban Design for the City of Toronto, to share their thoughts and exchange ideas in an open forum discussion about the public realm, its role in our communities and its growing importance with respect to future planning practice.
