Christy Hempel is currently a PhD candidate in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, University of Guelph. Her research is focused on collaborative processes for rural landscape character assessment, and resource management decision-making. She obtained a Bachelor of Architecture (University of Waterloo) in 1991. After a 20 year career as architectural illustrator, she returned to University in 2009 as she became increasingly involved in community efforts to strengthen citizen engagement, develop community resilience, and build sustainable landscapes in the Grey/Bruce region of Ontario. She received a Masters of Planning in 2010, and her current work is focused on collaborative planning and design for rural communities and landscapes. In addition to her research, Christy has instructed courses in the Landscape Architecture and Arts and Science programs at the University of Guelph, and currently teaches a First Year Seminar course that focuses on Sense of Place.
