George Thomas Kapelos FRAIC received a Master of Architecture from Yale in 1993. Since 2000 he has taught studio and lecture courses in design, history, theory, housing and landscape at Ryerson University (Toronto). Prior to his academic appointment, he was engaged in architectural practice and planning in the public and private sectors.
 
He was Department Chair from 2002 – 2007, during which time he oversaw significant revisions to the undergraduate curriculum and the introduction of new graduate programs. He is past president of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, past Chair of the Toronto Society of Architects, a Senior Fellow at Massey College (Toronto), and was elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2007. He is licensed Architect and a Registered Professional Planner in Ontario.
 
His research focuses on the interrelationship between humans and their environments, through critical investigations of architecture, landscape and urbanism in the modern and post-modern periods, and contemporary explorations of design and design pedagogy. Themes of Canadian modernity, health and the environment, phenomenology and architectural education are explored. His 2015 book, Competing Modernisms: Toronto’s New City Hall and Square that examined the 500+ submissions to Toronto’s 1958 competition received critical acclaim internationally. His research and teaching has been recognized through international awards and honours.
