#OPPI18 will be hosted by Laurentian University in the City of Greater Sudbury. To learn more about our host city, the City of Greater Sudbury, and Laurentian University, along with information on accommodations and how to get to the City of Greater Sudbury, please see our information below:

Sudbury is located in the traditional territory of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, surrounded by the beauty of boreal forests and the majestic expanse of more than 330 freshwater lakes within its regional boundaries.

You will also find a culturally vibrant city that is a hub for northern Ontario's entire population on many fronts: education, healthcare, governmental services, recreation and tourism, shopping, and so much more. The Sudbury community is proud of its mining roots and of its stature as the world's second largest nickel producer. They are equally proud of our environmental remediation success story, recognized worldwide, and which you can witness for yourself during your upcoming conference.

Laurentian University, located on the traditional territory of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, is committed to strengthening the foundation of knowledge in higher education and research in order to offer an outstanding university experience in English and French with a comprehensive approach to Indigenous education. Together with its federated partners, Laurentian University prepares leaders who bring innovative and intelligent solutions to local and global issues.

Laurentian University is also home to 9,600 postsecondary students pursuing their passion through postsecondary studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also the alma matter for more than 60,000 alumni.

The campus is located on 765 acres of land, minutes away from the downtown core, yet a resort onto itself. It is bordered by five freshwater lakes, a golf course, and the Lake Laurentian Conservation area.

If you are the outdoors' type, don't miss the trails and plan to make it out onto the lake. The University offer rentals of every kind, from bikes, to canoes, to paddle boards...and they have their very own private beach. Typically, the weather and water will be warm enough for a swim until after the Thanksgiving Weekend, so pack a swimsuit.

If you get the opportunity, don't miss a visit to the rooftop of the Parker Building, the highest observation point in Sudbury, for a magnificent 360 degree of view of mother nature's best work.

A short drive downtown and you can discover an additional gem of ours, the McEwen School of Architecture (MSoA). The MSoA is founded upon pride of place. This philosophy embraces the resiliency of northern people and the unique beauty of the northern Ontario landscape.

The MSoA is an unfolding experiment in emerging pedagogies and diverse cultures. Our unique program highlights design and culture for northern climates, regionally and internationally, with an emphasis in developing expertise in wood, design-build studios using traditional and emerging fabrication methods, community-led design, and an extensive co-op program in both industry and professional contexts.

The French, English, Métis, and First Nations faculty and student body participate in design studios in both French and English, as well as opportunities to work alongside Indigenous Elders-in-residence. Their innovative award-winning four-building complex is both intentionally didactic and environmentally sustainable, acting as our first and most accessible teaching tool.

The MSoA is led by its current Director, Dr. David Fortin. A member of the Métis Nation of Ontario, Dr. Fortin is the first Indigenous director of a Canadian architecture school.

Interesting facts about Laurentian University:

  • The Vale Living with Lakes Centre, adjacent to the front entrance to campus, has received LEED Platinum Certification in 2014. The centre's infrastructure was built on environmentally sound principles which maximize energy savings while respecting our environment, including a rainwater filtration parking zone and a green roof designed for blueberry crops.
  • Laurentian University's R.D. Parker Building provides the highest vantage point in Sudbury from its 12th floor rooftop. The building originally housed the University's library - which was moved in 1989 to its current location adjacent to the classroom building.
  • The Alphonse-Raymond building was constructed to house l'École de l'éducation and provide an enriched environment for future francophone teachers. It has also recently benefited from a transformation through the campus modernization project.
  • Opened in 2005, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is northern Ontario's primary source of qualified physicians for our northern communities.
  • The School of Education building was built on sustainable design technology which makes it environmentally friendly. It uses a geothermal heating/cooling system and has glazed windows which allow it to use 40% less energy. The building houses a circular smudging room where many Indigenous celebrations and teachings are held.
