106A: “Limited Residential Development” & Surplus Rural Lots in Northern Ontario

This session will review the Provincial Policy Statement definition of “limited residential development” in rural areas and compare how it is being interpreted by the province and Ontario municipalities. The session will also explore the economic impacts and social/political implications surrounding the creation of surplus rural residential lots in municipalities with no or slow growth. The discussion will focus on Northern Ontario communities with rural development pressures. Examples of recent official plan comprehensive review’s and the approaches taken to rural residential lot creation will be highlighted.

  • Understand that the economic impact of the PPS is not uniform across the province
  • Gain knowledge about the unique development context of the Nort
