107B: A review of brownfields regulation and redevelopment in Ontario

October 11, 2018

11:30am - 12:00pm

This presentation focuses on Ontario’s voluntary brownfields remediation and redevelopment program drawing on the results of three research projects funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and Ryerson University’s Centre for Urban Research and Land Development. One project examines the scale and character of remediation and redevelopment activity in Ontario since 2004 using Records of Site Condition submitted by qualified professionals. Another examines the nature of brownfield property development in Toronto and two smaller cities—Waterloo, Kingston—using 2004 and 2011 property assessment data. The third investigates the perceptions of private sector stakeholders.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge about how Ontario's voluntary brownfields remediation and redevelopment program works
  • Understand how remediation and redevelopment have unfolded throughout the province and in a handful of urban markets
  • Gain knowledge about how to successfully integrate cleanup and land use
