October 11, 2018

3:30pm - 4:00pm

Implementation of the North Bay Urban Aboriginal Strategy (UAS) demands many of the same skills planners have to offer.  The main goal of the UAS is to achieve true Indigenous social, cultural and economic inclusion.  The session will explore the many facets of the Urban Aboriginal Strategy including housing, cultural learning, reconciliation, education, justice, employment and health.  Context will be provided on the rapidly changing demographic profile experienced in the North Bay community and the implications of increasing Indigenous migration from the James Bay region.  The session will conclude with proven ideas as to how to engage the Indigenous community and tips on Reconciliation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Share proven strategies for achieving Indigenous social, cultural  and economic inclusion
  • Understanding how planners' standard toolkit can be used for improving Indigenous lives
  • Demonstrating how simple local implementation measures to contribute to reconciliation
