A century of forestry, mining and smelting activities profoundly altered Greater Sudbury’s local environment. Early smelting operations resulted in elevated levels of sulphur dioxide in the air and metals in the soils that virtually eliminated vegetation over 82,000 hectares. Four decades later, regreening techniques have been applied to thousands of hectares of land and nearly 10-million trees have been planted. While formerly barren rocky hills are now covered with young stands of trees, much work remains to establish a healthy, self-sustaining forest ecosystem. This session will highlight local regreening innovations, which have remained relevant after 40 years despite ongoing changes in funding, community priorities, and ecological development.
