700: Zoning for the Future

October 12, 2018

2:00pm - 3:00pm

Increasingly, municipalities are using zoning by-laws as proactive planning tools. Although zoning is somewhat limited by its inherent prescriptiveness, there are many opportunities to better align zoning with planning policy. Drawing on case studies from across Ontario, this session will review the merits and challenges of pre-zoning for intensification. Topics will include infrastructure resiliency, maximum parking standards, form-based zoning, heritage conservation regulations, and other approaches to making municipalities future-ready.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to develop zoning by-laws that proactively implement planning policy objectives
  • Understand the merits and challenges of pre-zoning and similar zoning approaches
  • Gain knowledge about recent best practices and resources to consider when developing future-ready zoning by-laws
