703: Planning for Economic Opportunities Outside of Ontario’s Large Urban Centres

October 12, 2018

2:00pm - 3:00pm

Municipalities facilitate and accommodate economic growth. To ensure long-term economic and fiscal sustainability, there is an increasing need for small to mid-sized communities, located outside of Ontario’s large urban centres, to optimize opportunities to accommodate growth, as well as strengthen industry and labour force attraction and retention. This session will examine the competitiveness of communities located outside of large urban centres within the context of recent demographic and economic trends. It will explore ways to enhance economic prospects in these communities through planning-related initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge of recent demographic and economic trends within Ontario’s small to mid-sized municipalities and
  • Understand why these communities are facing more challenges transitioning to a diversified and knowledge-based economy than large urban centres
  • Gain knowledge about the factors influenceing municipal development competitiveness
  • Gain knowledge about potential planning measures to improve municipal competitiveness in communities outside of Ontario’s large urban centres
