MW4: Sudbury – the Emerging Downtown

October 12, 2018

11:00am - 1:00pm

Pre-registration & Additional fees apply

Sudbury’s downtown is undergoing a remarkable renaissance, becoming both the business and cultural centre of the urban region and a delightful, happening place. That dynamic has its origins in a planning strategy captured by the 2012 Sudbury Downtown Master Plan and in a series of major initiatives such as Laurentian University’s new Architectural School and several public space improvements. This workshop will explore the role of the master plan in tranforming the downtown. It will begin at the Architecture School, featuring a roundtable of key players in the downtown renaissance, then continue through a guided walking tour downtown. The presentation will be fully bilingual.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to successfully plan a downtown in a mid-sized, slow-growth city
  • Understand the role of catalytic projects like the Architecture School
  • Gain knowledge about the importance of fostering a rich street, sidewalk and public space to animate the downtown
