"REDLINED" oppi by-law
The recommended By-law changes below were approved by Council at their June, 2021 meeting for confirmation by the membership at the Annual General Meeting on October 6, 2021. Reference
By-Law Section Nine (9).
Existing Language
Redlined Version
Rationale
Gender-specific appears throughout Bylaw (i.e., “he/she, his/hers, etc.”)
2.1.4 A Non-Practicing Member is a Full Member or a Candidate Member who is not engaged in the activity of planning for gain, who has applied to the Institute and been accepted in writing by the Registrar as a Non-Practicing Member. A Non-Practicing Member is not eligible to vote or to be elected a director of the Institute and is not eligible to use the designation “Registered Professional Planner” or “RPP,” or to use a seal designating that person as a “Registered Professional Planner” or “RPP.” For a Candidate Member, time spent as a Non-Practicing Member shall not comprise any part of any term specified for membership qualification.
Change to gender neutral language (i.e., they/them, theirs ,etc.) throughout the Bylaw.
2.1.4 A Non-Practicing Member is a Full Member or a Candidate Member who is not engaged in the activity of planning for gain, who has applied to the Institute and been accepted in writing by the Registrar as a Non-Practicing Member. A Non-Practicing Member is
not
eligible to vote,
or to
but not
be elected a director of the Institute.
A Non-Practicing Full Member
and
is
not
eligible to use
only
the designation “Registered Professional Planner
(Non-Practicing)
” or “RPP
(Non-Practicing).
”
A non-practicing Full member is not permitted
or
to use a seal designating that person as a “Registered Professional Planner ”or “RPP.” For a Candidate Member, time spent as a Non-Practicing Member shall not comprise any part of any term specified for membership qualification.
2.1.5 Lifetime membership is granted to a Retired member in recognition of their lifetime of service to the public interest, after meeting the criteria. Lifetime members are not eligible to vote or be elected a Director of the Institute and must not be practicing planning for gain. Lifetime members are eligible to use only the designation Registered Professional Planner (Lifetime) or RPP (Lifetime).
Changing to gender-neutral language is an important consideration for those who do not identify as either male or female; language should be as inclusive and non-specific as possible.
2.1.4 Benchmarked against industry best practices and after receiving input from OPPI members, these proposed changes were being made to ensure the Non-Practicing category continues to provide value and is more considerate of members’ unique, individual circumstances necessitating their move to this category.
2.1.5 This membership category serves as recognition to those who, after being a member of OPPI in good standing for their entire career, would otherwise resign from the Institute fully and is based on an industry standard across other professional associations.
