2 days, 2 disciplines, 2 ways to participate – defining our professional roles and uniting to build more equitable, accessible and inspired communities.
#2GETHER2022
Toronto’s Alexandra Park is in the midst of a revitalization, re-imagining the community as a mixed-use, mixed-income neighbourhood in Toronto’s Downtown. It is unique from other social housing redevelopment projects in Toronto in several ways. The majority of housing in the community is managed by the Atkinson Housing Co-op, the first social housing community in Canada to convert to a co-operative. The revitalization is being guided by a key principle of “zero displacement” meaning no community member will voluntarily have to leave the community during or after construction and has engaged residents to define the future of the public realm and its relationship to the community, housing, and employment opportunities. A central driver of the revitalization is the shift from an inward facing enclave to a community linked to the vibrant neighbourhoods around – through new streets, mews and park spaces. Participants will learn about community revitalization – from initial community visions to master planning and development approvals to phased implementation – involving several diverse partners, gain insight into the complexities of planning, development and the guiding principle of “zero displacement” and explore evolving city building concepts in a constrained downtown site.
