Facing change and guiding Ontario into the next quarter century
Cyndi Rottenberg-Walker, a partner of Urban Strategies, brings a strong multidisciplinary background to her work as a planner. Her understanding of the many factors that contribute to healthy urban environments has been applied across a diversity of project types, scales, jurisdictions and urban environments, and include large-scale master plans, complex planning approvals and innovative policy studies. Cyndi’s current and recent projects include the 4.3 million-square-foot mixed-use Union Park complex on Front Street West, including an exciting new two acre public space above the rail corridor as an eastward extension to Toronto’s planned Rail Deck Park; comprehensive mixed-use redevelopment of the 28 acre former Mr. Christie plant at the heart of Humber Bay Shores, delivering a much-needed new GO Transit Station and other essential community assets; remediation and redevelopment of the 70-acre former Imperial Oil refinery on Lake Ontario in West Port Credit Village, providing 3,000 new homes, a comprehensive parks network and a waterfront innovation campus; the Revitalization Plan for the Alexandra Park neighbourhood, securing the replacement of over 800 social housing units within a new income-integrated community centered around significant new parks, and a new Community Centre, child care and social enterprise spaces; among many others. Cyndi speaks regularly at professional conferences and participates in expert panels. In 2015, she was invited as a keynote for the Making Climate Performative Places (SUDes conf) in Sweden; in 2017 she presented at the Presidential Climate Leadership Summit in Tempe, Arizona and in 2018 at the London (UK) Real Estate Forum. She is a member of the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) University Development and Innovation Council; served as Co-Chair of the ULI Toronto Spring Symposium in both 2017 and 2019; is a member of the ULI Americas Spring 2020 Host Committee; and is a member of the ULI Women’s Leadership Initiative Network Integration Committee. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and an active member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, serving for many years on its Recognition and Nominating Committees. Her work has been recognized through numerous awards.
