Facing change and guiding Ontario into the next quarter century
John Fleming is the Managing Director of Planning and City Planner with the City of London. He has an Honours degree in Urban Development from Western University and a Masters Degree in Planning from the University of Toronto. He has worked in both the private and public sectors as a Planner in the province of Ontario for over 25 years. He has played key roles in establishing a number of organizations, including the London Economic Development Corporation, Mainstreet London, Landmarks London and others. As an urbanist, Mr. Fleming is very interested in city-building and urban design. In his current position as the Chief City Planner, he is responsible for a broad portfolio that includes such things as planning policy and programs, urban design, heritage planning, urban regeneration, parks and trail planning, growth management, environmental planning, urban forestry and planning application review. He led the ReThink London process and the subsequent development of The London Plan – representing a leading edge approach for planning in Ontario. He and his team have prepared city-building plans such as London’s Downtown Plan, the Urban Forestry Strategy, and London’s Urban Agriculture Strategy. He is also playing a major role in various transformational initiatives such as Shift London Rapid Transit, the Dundas Place Flex Street, and the Back to the River project at the Forks of the Thames. He has received several Awards of Planning Excellence from the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, is a Board Member with the Council for Canadian Urbanism and is Vice Chair of the Regional Planning Commissioners of Ontario.
