201B: Why Bringing Back Main Streets is critical to Covid recovery

September 23, 2020

2:15PM - 2:45PM

In May 2020 Canadian Urban Institute initiated a national program, www.bringbackmainstreet.ca to galvanize people’s commitment to investing in the future of their local ‘main street’. COVID has brought numerous challenges to independent businesses and community amenities typically located along main streets and local shopping areas. But it also presenting planners and city builders with a unique opportunity to re-make our Main Streets to meet emerging needs, and adapt to providing goods, services and experiences in new ways. BBMS has been engaging thousands of partners and business operators across the country in block studies, design challenges, placemaking pilots, engaging diverse stakeholders to  build main streets for the present and future. Mary will challenge planners to work with local main street communities to enable places of commerce, creativity and congregation safely and productively.
