#2GETHER2022
Canada is experiencing what many are calling an affordable housing crisis. Both federally and provincially, policies and programs have been developed to assist municipalities and developers to create more afforable housing. Those programs on their own are sometimes not enough to incent housing development, and municipalities have a key role to play in ensuring programs and policies cooordinate between all levels of government. The City of Greater Sudbury is committed to promoting an appropriate range of housing types and densities, including affordable housing, to maintain and enhance a healthy, complete community. On July 10, 2018, the City of Greater Sudbury adopted the Affordable Housing Strategy, which was developed in consultation with the development community and local service providers. The strategy resulted in five action items: the development of an affordable housing community improvement plan, the appointment of a single point of contact and revamped website, a series of amendments to the zoning by-law, amendments to the development charges by-law, and development of a landbanking strategy. All items have been implemented, with the exception of the landbanking strategy, which is scheduled to be considered by council in early 2020. This session explores the develpment of the strategy, including stakeholder collaboration. The presentation also looks at examples of affordable housing development and the Social Housing Revitalization Strategy, which is underway.
