206A - Greenfield affordable housing: Winning the battle

September 30, 2020

12:00PM - 12:15PM

According to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the need for shelter is a basic physiological human requirement. The combination of increasing shelter costs along with a growing population makes it very difficult for many families to find affordable housing. The growing need for housing has influenced planning policy and implementation; a waitlist for affordable housing has been created and various levels of government have made efforts to ensure housing options are available for a broader range of incomes.

This session provides ideas for how to include more affordable housing in new greenfield development. We will examine government-owned affordable housing and discuss a unique case study on new affordable housing in greenfield development, as well as demonstrate how planning policy and development processes work together to secure sites for affordable housing in a new greenfield community.
