113 - Urban Indigenous Housing

Every community member deserves a safe and healthy home - however many Indigenous people do not have this basic need met.  Many Indigenous communities have housing shortages, housing stock, and funding requirements that do not meet the needs of community members.  For Indigenous Peoples seeking housing outside of the community often experience a disconnection from land, culture and community.  Though needs vary, many homes are not set up for multi-generational households, changing demographics, as well as a desire for connecting to culture, land and language.  Planners have a role to play in how our cities and towns consider the housing needs of urban Indigenous populations, and how Planners work with Indigenous Communities whose traditional territories they occupy.  

Please join us as we talk about what we have observed through our years of working with Indigenous Communities across Ontario (and Canada) and how Planners can consider this in Official Plans and other ideas for including Urban Indigenous populations.  As always, we do not want to be seen as speaking on behalf of Indigenous Peoples, but want to share our thoughts and experiences with the goal of encouraging planners to have more conversations, ask more questions and promote more action around engaging and building relationships with Indigenous Peoples and Communities.
