President, The Accountability Group, Inc.

Lyn McDonell is a governance, strategy and organizational effectiveness consultant. She is a Chartered Director (C. Dir) and a Certified Management Consultant (and Fellow). She is President of The Accountability Group, Inc based in Toronto, Ontario -- a firm that provides consulting services and training in governance and strategy, and customized group facilitation.

Lyn worked with OPPI as a consultant from 2009 to 2019.  She led governance sessions annually with Council and facilitated two strategic plans, the last one being the current one.  She also facilitated the Indigenous Planning Perspectives Task Force and its report.

Lyn’s professional purpose has been as a provider of governance education and facilitator of strategy helping public-serving and not-for-profit boards of directors lead and deliver on mission working with senior management. However, she is shifting her interest to explore more about how in everyday conversations people can negotiate polarized views and get somewhere in shared understanding and how these can and must translate into change and policy and making things happen at every level.  The empowerment of the individual is key. In Lyn’s view, a shift is already afoot and we need spread, pathways, and platform events to break through however these need to be noticed, crafted and emerge.

Lyn recently became a subscriber member of OPPI although she is not a RPP.  Lyn is a sociologist, and an occasional university course leader at York University, FACC 6600 Accountability in the Public Sector. Lyn served on the Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee of CPA Canada from 2007-2017, and was its Chair for the last four years. The Committee contributes advice to CPA’s publications on not-for-profit organizational governance.  Lyn is also Past-President of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Ontario -- an organization which fosters excellence and integrity in the management consulting profession. She is author of “The Art of Asking Questions as a Director” in the 2nd Edition of The Handbook of Board Governance published by Wiley 2020.
