Effective urban planning requires a robust engagement with the community who will be living and working in it. As alternative ways of engaging continue to emerge the opportunities and expectations multiply. This session will examine three case studies—Feeling Congested? Toronto Talks Transportation, University of British Columbia, Student Union Building public consultation and Rethinking Tolfino’s historic Main Street, B.C. Each of these combines the use of new media with traditional engagement tools. The session will offer an analysis of the advantages and challenges of using various forms of new media in the planning and design of the stakeholder engagement process and in the use of these tools for design professional procurement.
