Today there is considerable public awareness and interest in public spaces, but there is also fewer public resources to support them. The challenge is to create a role for the private sector while ensuring the public realm does not become a private domain. This session will showcase new and ongoing research by ERA Architects, Parks People and the University of Toronto that explores the idea of inviting private partners into public spaces. These partnerships tend to be less formalized, more complex, and outside established paradigms. The session will share the latest academic thinking on partnership design and implementation and best practices, and will offer examples of projects from Toronto and the GTHA.
