405C: Combining Environmental Planning with Community Based Planning for the Green Line Park Proposal

October 05, 2016

This presentation builds on the Major Research Paper Nicole recently submitted in the Master’s in Environmental Studies, Urban Planning Program (York University). Her research examined the participatory/ community-based planning model that local not-for-profit Park People and community group Friends of the Green Line have used in planning for the Green Line. The Green Line is a proposal to transform a five kilometre hydro corridor into a continuous park and trail network that crosses through de-industrializing neighbourhoods of Toronto. My presentation will outline the community-based planning practises Park People and Friends of the Green Line use to reanimate the underused and neglected corridor as well as identify opportunities for increased community participation in the project. The goal of this presentation is to highlight the significance and possibilities of combining community-based planning practices with the goals of environmental sustainability in de-industrializing urban areas.
