700: How to Conduct a Charrette Around the Public Realm

October 06, 2016

2:00pm - 3:00pm

When we think of the reuse and revitalization of existing places, we tend to focus on the site context, with an inward view looking out.  An argument could be made that we should give greater attention to the reverse, focusing on the public realm as the binding element that connects all sites in a community.  It is the quality of the public realm that can make a difference between whether a place is enjoyed or neglected.  Striving to improve our public realm can help to achieve safe, attractive and animated spaces, adding value and encouraging reinvestment to abutting properties.

This workshop focuses on how to conduct a charrette around the public realm as a mechanism for reuse and revitalization of spaces within the public realm.   Participants of this workshop will learn how to design, plan and conduct a charrette focusing specifically on elements catered to the public realm.  Key elements of the workshop will include public realm best practices, approaches to background preparation, options for when and how to best engage stakeholders, and strategies to counter the politics surrounding public investment.    Participants will come away from the workshop with a charrette guide that can be tailored to their own local public realm projects.
