106B: Caledon Case Study: Community Growth – A Rural Paradox?

The Town of Caledon comprises pockets of unique rural communities that have historically developed to support surrounding farmland, in a landscape of rich natural and cultural resources. Located on the outskirts of the Greater Toronto Area, Caledon is now facing growth pressures that appear to threaten its cherished character, culture, and lifestyle. This session will explore key themes and findings arising from research, public engagement, and policy review. It will generate dialogue regarding community readiness in the context of preservation and adaptation, and will address area-specific tools that planners can utilize as a means of preserving natural and cultural assets that contribute to a sense of identity, in the face of intensification.
 
Learning Objectives:

• Gain knowledge about how to think critically and utilize planning competencies to identify, analyze, and categorize rural community character, culture, and lifestyles
• Understand how to foster community readiness in response to development pressures in rural communities, through the analysis and adaptation of policies, zoning by-laws, development standards, and design guidelines
• Understand how to optimize public engagement to foster input and to generate community readiness in the face of uncertainty regarding intensification in small and rural settlement areas
