The devastating impacts of wildland fire on economic viability, community stability, and ecosystem functions are widely acknowledged. New policies in the Provincial Policy Statement, 2014 ensure that communities consider and plan to avoid catastrophic losses to their communities due to wildland fire. Land use planning decisions contribute to the reduction in loss of life or injury, or property damage. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Wildland Fire Risk Assessment and Mitigation Reference Manual provides approaches to risk assessment and mitigation techniques to promote decisions that are consistent with the PPS.
