506: Growing Up: Planning for Children in Vertical Communities

October 12, 2018

11:00am - 12:00pm

As communities intensify, new development must accommodate family structures of various size to create complete and livable communities.  Hear about the City of Toronto’s draft guidelines to direct how new development can better function for larger households at three scales: the unit, the building and the neighbourhood. The practical, tangible and measurable guidelines recognise the ways that families with children use the built environment, and what the evolving definition of “home” is. Using innovating consultation approaches, a consultant team with expertise in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, marketing, and market analysis developed the guidelines now being piloted by the City.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn several new techniques for engagement
  • Identify key child and family-friendly design interventions at 3 scales (unit, building, neighbourhood)
  • Discuss approaches to stakeholder buy-in (e.g. getting the development community on board)
