605: Planning Around the ION: catalyzing investment, placemaking & community resiliency

October 12, 2018

12:30pm - 1:00pm

The Region of Waterloo is building the ION rapid transit corridor connecting the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge. This new transit infrastructure presents a tremendous opportunity to improve mobility, support placemaking, and create a series of vibrant, mixed-use, resilient communities along the corridor. The cities of Waterloo and Kitchener have undertaken Station Area Planning studies for the lands around the ION stations to identify and promote a series of distinct, place-specific resiliency and community-building objectives. This session will explore these approaches to capitalizing on the regional investment in the ION LRT.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge about how different municipalities along the ION corridor are defining and planning for resilient communities based on local realities
  • Understand how transit infrastructure investment can serve as a catalyst for a range of community-building initiatives, and the different approaches to identifying and advancing these through the station area planning process
  • Gain knowledge about various municipal approaches to leveraging transit investment to support private-sector investment and job creation within an evolving economy
