Pre-registration Required. **Session is currently sold out**
This session will focus on merging land economics, policies, and design best practices to achieve resilient, community-oriented main streets. Participants will be offered tools to measure the health of main streets and to strengthen urban retail environments. Emerging market trends in the retail industry and their implications for main streets will be highlighted. Toronto’s recent experiences with major commercial-retail applications along fine-grain main streets which serve local, low-rise neighbourhoods will provide insight into the opportunities and limitations of Ontario’s planning legislation framework. Participants will explore a planning case study of a Walmart-anchored retail development application in close proximity to Toronto’s downtown, but surrounded by stable low-rise neighbourhoods. Attendees will then take the Bathurst streetcar to College Street and Kensington Market to walk the areas impacted by the retail development with local experts and City of Toronto staff. **Session is currently sold out**
