Conference 2015

Realizing Intensification in York Region’s Centres and Corridors

October 06, 2015

12:20-12:35pm

In this ignite session, participants will learn about York Region’s city-building initiatives, vision and general policy framework and how effective they have been to date. The presentation will include the changing nature of the planner’s role during the transition from policy to implementation and the challenges that exist and must be overcome to improve the effectiveness of an upper-tier municipality in responding to a built form change from low-rise to high-rise development.

York Region is experiencing a dramatic change in its built form. In recent years, the number of new multiple unit residential developments has outpaced single-detached developments. This shift is in large part due to the strong vision and policy framework established for the Region’s centres and corridors. Also it is supported by the significant investment in new rapid transit infrastructure, including the vivaNext Rapidway and Spadina Subway Extension to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop an implementation strategy for regional scale city-building initiatives
  • Discover how intensification is driving change in York Region
  • Explore transit oriented development
