The role of a public servant can be at times tricky, to say the least. As planners, we have a professional obligation to serve the public interest, to bring forward sound recommendations based on due diligence, analysis and best practices. At the same time, our most sustainable cities and our most livable places are an outcome of recognizing planning as both an art and a science. Great places are nuanced, evolving, and prodded into being by many players, with many shared interests.
As a result, great planners seek to negotiate outcomes with a wide array of stakeholders while remaining committed to a clear vision to plan places where people and life will flourish over the long-term. To get there, planners have a critical role to play in facilitating an informed conversation about our shared future with democratically elected officials, residents, land owners, and other levels of government.
