Zoning for Inclusion: Human Rights and the Public Interest

This session will focus on the critical connections among zoning, affordable housing and human rights. It will explore how planners are helping move communities from saying “No” to saying “Welcome.” Participants will learn about recent legal decisions, settlements and municipal zoning decisions that are helping to remove barriers to inclusion. They will gain tips and tools for meeting the human rights challenges in their communities and ensuring that planning truly serves the broader public interest.

Learner Outcomes: 

  • Understand how the PPS, the Professional Code of Practice and the Human Rights Code work together to increase inclusion
  • Share your expertise and hear expert practical advice on identifying and removing barriers in planning processes and zoning bylaws
  • Learn about opportunities and tools for working with communities and elected officials to move from “people zoning” to real zoning in the public interest
