Exploring Ethnoburbs from a Retail Perspective: Implications for Suburban Planning

October 08, 2015

11:30am-12:30pm

Exploring Ethnoburbs from a Retail Perspective: Implications for Suburban Planning This session will highlight research findings from over 100 suburban ethnic retail clusters across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and discuss the implications for suburban planning. Ethnic shopping strips and centres have emerged as a phenomenon in the GTA, not only making and marking a unique suburban landscape, but also providing a sense of community for immigrants and the community at large.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of ethnoburbs and ethnic retailing
  • Provide observational methods for planners to understand cultural spaces
  • Explore ethnic retail spaces as community spaces.
