Goldfields: Rethinking Land Use Incompatibility - City of Timmins Case Study: Hollinger Gold Mine

October 08, 2015

1:45pm-2:00pm

The session will highlight what can be achieved by taking an industrial mining liability and turning it into a positive community asset. Located near the downtown core of the City of Timmins, the Hollinger Project is one of the most significant mining rehabilitation projects undertaken in Northern Ontario. It involves a unique private-public partnership to revitalize a 100-ha. working open pit gold mine plagued by hazards, into a sustainable public greenspace.  Participants will gain insights in designing rehabilitation projects that leave the host community with a legacy of renewal, restoration and revitalization.

Learning Outcomes:

  • How to reinforce the Planner’s role in creating a sustainable public space as part of an industrial rehabilitation project.
  • How to incorporate and integrate community design principles as part of a private public rehabilitation project.
  • How to understand the history of a space while planning on revitalizing the area.
