Does the Province’s planning framework make sense for places with slow or uneven population growth or declining population? Much of the Province’s planning framework is structured to shape and manage growth. Most growth in Ontario is concentrated in a few locations but other parts of the province are, or soon will be, faced with declining population. Planning for municipalities with such different growth dynamics demands a range of approaches. The roundtable session will explore the challenges of growth-centered and “one-size-fits-all” policy frameworks when planning for municipalities with unique needs, address on-the-ground challenges faced by planners in municipalities with slower or uneven growth or population decline, and look ahead to understand what to expect in the future given potential socio-economic and technology changes.
