With over thirty years of planning experience, John Fleming currently serves as the Vice President of the Council for Canadian Urbanism. He has held a position on the Board of Directors for CanU for 4 years and has co-led the Mid-sized City Caucus for the past three years. He is the former Managing Director of Planning and City Planner for the City of London - a position he held for 10 years. Mr. Fleming's work and experience spans a wide range subject areas including such things as: (i) managing the planning application review process; (ii) urban regeneration initiatives such as leading the redevelopment and procurement process of former school and hospital sites; development and administration of community improvement plans and financial incentive programs; preparation of , core area action plans; (iii) managing parks planning and design; (iv) preparation of Official Plans, including the innovative London Plan, and several secondary plans; (v) managing the urban design program; (vi) managing heritage planning, including archaeological management plans, heritage conservation district plans, and reviewing heritage conservation applications; (vii) environmental and ecological planning; (viii) planning for sustainability and resiliency; (ix) leading urban design competitions; and (ix) launching a new Smart City program. He recently prepared a strategy for London to move forward on Climate Emergency action, prepared a new Community Improvement Plan to support affordable housing, and wrote a comprehensive Core Area Action Plan designed to address social, safety, and economic issues with clear and tangible action in the Core. He has earned five Excellence in Planning Awards from the Ontario Professional Planner's Institute. Mr. Fleming has taught part-time at Western University and the Schulich School of Business.
