It may come as a surprise to hear that Hamilton boasts over 100 waterfalls and cascades. The presence of the Niagara Escarpment—a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve—offers the appropriate geological context for the waterfalls. This session will offer a guided tour of some of the larger waterfalls and cascades in Hamilton and a thought-provoking discussion of the role of waterfalls as public space in the city. Participants will learn about the waterfalls within the context of ownership, management, public access, connections to the city’s trail network and the regional Bruce Trail, their cultural and historical relevance, connections to wetlands and watercourses, and current water-related environmental priorities. Please wear hiking/walking shoes and dress for the weather. Workshop runs rain or shine.
