A View of Markham's Growth Strategy from Both Sides of the Counter

October 06, 2015

10:45am-1:00pm

This session will explore the creative tension that binds the public and private sector through a discussion of two Markham case studies: Markham Centre intensification and future urban area greenfield development. Participants will learn about Markham’s policy framework and municipal vision for growth and the development industry’s response to the municipal plans, given the realities of economic cycles, market realities and costs.

The largest node is planned at Markham Centre, the new high-density downtown at a major Metrolinx anchor mobility hub. This 300 hectare Intensification site will accommodate over 40,000 residents and 39,000 jobs.

The greenfield site is the Future Urban Area of undeveloped, urban expansion land along Markham’s northern boundary. It has an area of about 975 hectares, and is planned to accommodate 40,000 persons in 13,000 units in a series of residential neighbourhoods, and 19,000 jobs.
