Building Communities through Building Highways – Story of the Rt. Honourable Herb Gray Parkway

October 06, 2015

3:15pm-4:15pm

This session will offer the Herb Grey Parkway as a case study highlighting how highway infrastructure projects can work with the community to bring integrated solutions to the varying expectations of our urban environment.

Historically highway expansion has been seen as detriments to community building. However, the Rt. Honourable Herb Gray Parkway (HGP), an extension of Highway 401 to the new International Crossing over the Detroit River, will incorporate 300 acres of new parkland, over 20km of new cycling and pedestrian trails, 11 land bridge crossings, seven pedestrian bridges, three fish compensation areas and restoration of the original Carolinian landscape. Currently under construction, the project showcases a contextually sensitive approach to highway building.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Our profession’s ability to tackle and lead aspects of a complex multi-disciplinary project.
  • Unique ways of employing context sensitive approaches to large infrastructure projects.
  • The need to better integrate major infrastructure into the urban fabric
