This session will offer a charrette about designing charrettes. Using an Ottawa-Gatineau case study, supplemented by international examples, the session will address the role of planners and community engagement. It will outline the steps, analysis, design process and potential outcomes of a successful charrette. The case study takes a 146-acre site, where a mixed-use community is permitted and a golf club site set for redevelopment, and demonstrates how consultation with the municipal government and various stakeholders provides designs that the entire community can stand behind. The site interfaces with a range of land uses, including large-format retail shopping centre and extension of the rapid transit system, employment and low-rise residential uses. The lands are located north of the Ottawa River and include three wetlands.
