This session will focus on the relationship between the planning, design and built form of rural communities and the corresponding health outcomes. Participants will learn about the differences between rural and urban settings with respect to resident health and the planning response. They will explore the design and administrative responses that rural municipalities can use to address common health issues within their communities. Intended to engage participants in a focused discussion of rural healthy community issues, the session will provide highlights of recent research completed on behalf of Public Health Ontario. The research highlights the mechanisms needed to create conditions for improved health and wellbeing in Ontario’s rural communities.
