Improving Toronto's Street Trees

October 08, 2015

2:30pm-2:45pm

This session will focus on current initiatives to improve the health of the city's street tree population, which will result in stronger, healthier and more vibrant neighbourhoods and communities.

Large canopy trees provide enormous climatic, environmental, health, aesthetic and psychological benefits. However, downtown streetscapes are harsh growing environments for trees, and many do not grow to meaningfully contribute to Toronto's tree canopy. As the city of Toronto continues to grow, land use intensification and achieving tree canopy goals should not be considered as conflicting or mutually exclusive. As recognized in the city's Strategic Forest Management Plan, growth and intensification can be successfully integrated with a healthy tree canopy through cooperation among property owners, developers and various city divisions.
