This session will explore the science, engineering and design of low-impact development using case studies from Ontario and other jurisdictions. Planners play a pivotal role in the implementation of low-impact development as their skills are well suited to bringing together a diverse set of stakeholders, which is a pre-requisite for low-impact development. Low-impact development is a broad name for a design philosophy that is focused on reducing concentrated stormwater flows and maintaining pre-development hydrology. It is a complex planning issue that requires the interaction of water resource engineering, municipal engineering, transportation planners, landscape architects, hydrogeologists, ecologists and planners.
